What a fun little book.
I haven’t shown photos of any sewing yet, so I made a point of doing it here. One of these days I’ll show photos of all the steps, but then again, doing so with any frequency will get repetitious and boring. I’d almost rather you have to look at more than one project to get a visual sense of the process.
Anyway. I used wrappers from an Italian restaurant, off-white end paper, and blue and white headbands. The end result is a combination of clean and textured, with the black-and-white paper allowing the character of the boards to show through.
Instead of Mod Podge, I opted for a spray acrylic coating in matte. It’s UV-resistant, non-yellowing, and moisture-resistant; however, I found myself missing that “coating” feel of Mod Podge. I may have to try a satin or even glossy acrylic finish to see if that’s more appealing than the matte. Still, I think matte is appropriate here.
I’m pretty happy with this book overall. I trimmed all edges (foredge, head, and tail) with no issues, and casing in the book block was easy (whew). If I’m going to be knit-picky, I over-rounded the spine a little and my foredge curve is a bit choppy. I noticed it happening in real time, but I knew the curve would only become more pronounced if I kept messing with it. Sometimes compromises must be made.
